LTE Connectivity on Rock Devices (RockAIR LTE and RockFLEET GSM-LTE)

This article explains how LTE (cellular) connectivity works on TracPlus Rock devices, what settings are required for cellular reporting to work correctly, and the most common troubleshooting steps if LTE reports are missing or intermittent.

What is LTE Connectivity?

LTE connectivity means the device is using the cellular network (4G/LTE or LTE-M) to send tracking data to TracPlus over a mobile data connection.

Many Rock devices can send reports using both:

  • Cellular (LTE / LTE-M) when coverage is available
  • Iridium Satellite when cellular coverage is unavailable or weak

Because of this, it is normal to sometimes see a mix of:

  • CELL reports
  • SAT reports

while the device moves between coverage areas. RockAIR LTE Connectivity

RockAIR Device

RockAIR devices are designed to use both:

  • LTE/4G cellular networks
  • Iridium satellite connectivity

The device will always try to use LTE/mobile coverage first when available, as this is faster and more cost-effective.

How it works

  • When the device is within mobile coverage, it connects to nearby LTE/4G cell towers.
  • Tracking data, GPS positions, and messages are sent over the mobile network.
  • If the device moves out of mobile coverage, it will automatically switch to the Iridium satellite network.
  • Once LTE coverage becomes available again, the device switches back automatically.

In simple terms

RockAIR works like a mobile phone with built-in satellite backup.

This allows users to maintain tracking and communications even in remote areas such as:

  • Offshore operations
  • Rural locations
  • Mountainous terrain
  • Aviation routes

RockFLEET Connectivity

RockFLEET devices operate differently from RockAIR devices.

RockFLEET primarily uses the Iridium satellite network to provide communications and internet connectivity in areas where mobile coverage is unavailable.

How it works

  • The device connects directly to Iridium satellites.
  • Connected equipment such as laptops, onboard systems, or routers can then access data services through the terminal.
  • RockFLEET does not rely on LTE/mobile towers for normal operation.

In simple terms

RockFLEET works like a satellite internet terminal that connects directly to space rather than to mobile towers.

This makes it ideal for:

  • Maritime vessels
  • Offshore operations
  • Remote field deployments

Key Difference

Device Main Connectivity Type
RockAIR LTE/4G with automatic satellite backup
RockFLEET Satellite-first connectivity

Summary

  • RockAIR prioritises LTE/4G coverage and automatically switches to satellite when mobile coverage is unavailable.
  • RockFLEET primarily uses satellite connectivity at all times.
  • Both devices are designed to provide reliable communications in remote and challenging environments.
