Angle of Attack

Angle of Attack offers online ground schools, checkride prep, and flight training for aspiring pilots, with an emphasis on navigating remote locations.

Alaska is home to some of the most remote terrain on Earth. From soaring mountain ranges to frozen tundra, it’s spectacularly beautiful — but it’s not particularly hospitable when it comes to communication infrastructure. This poses quite the conundrum for Alaskan aviators like Chris Palmer, who runs a flight school called Angle of Attack in the tiny town of Homer, roughly 350 kilometers of Anchorage.

Angle of Attack offers online ground schools, checkride prep, and flight training for aspiring pilots, with an emphasis on navigating remote locations — and they use TracPlus to keep track of and communicate with their people and aircraft while they’re in the skies. Check out what Chris had to say about the value TracPlus brings to his business.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company. What do you do, and how do you use TracPlus on a daily basis? What assets are you tracking?

I run a flight school in Alaska and use a TracPlus RockAir to track our school airplane. Being as we’re in Alaska, following students on their flights is critical, as we have remote areas just outside our town.

For the occasional Alaska flying adventure, having tracking is even more critical. Nearly everything in Alaska is remote.

How did you become aware of TracPlus, and when did you begin using us? What was involved in your decision to become a TracPlus customer?

I really like TracPlus’s focus on aviation. The typical one-size-fits-all tracking just doesn’t work for someone who has an airplane. I like that my tail number is attached to the unit, and the increased tracking frequency on cellular is also a huge plus.

What TracPlus features and functionalities are the most important for you, and why?

Again, cellular tracking offers great peace of mind.

Of course, it’s incredibly important that I have the ability to communicate through the unit as well and to send messages to friends and family. In particular, it gives my wife assurance that I’m safe, both through messaging and tracking.

What key issues for you have TracPlus helped with?

Having TracPlus is all about safety. That’s the reason behind every feature. Having the extra layer of safety in the remote reaches of Alaska, and even in our own backyard, is absolutely imperative in this day and age.

After all, it’s not so much about being able to survive with onboard equipment, but the amount of time it takes to find me that counts. I know having a TracPlus reduces that time to being found, and that’s worth its weight in gold.
