SHOUT provides safety net in the South Atlantic

08 March 2011

When you're operating helicopters in and around the remote and inhospitable waters of the southern Atlantic, far off the coast of South America, you need a secure safety net.

In the case of the South Georgia Heritage Trust (www.sght.org), involved in a rat eradication project to protect the wildlife on South Georgia Island, that safety net is in the form of handheld tracking devices - known as SHOUT - from TracPlus.

SHOUT is a hand-held, battery-powered device that tracks the user anywhere on the planet via the IridiumTM satellite network, provides worldwide text messaging and a 24/7 monitored emergency distress locator and notification service - all in a cell phone-sized package.

All of which is exceedingly important when you're embarked on a mission to save the native birds from total annihilation.

Kiwi pilot, Peter Garden from Wanaka who has become somewhat of an international expert in rat eradication, is a key member of the airborne team. He can rest easy knowing that if something goes wrong while dropping bait, the SHOUT will let his colleagues know exactly where he is.
